Lions April 2012

Meatball

The lions have had a lot of visitors recently, keeping them entertained in their enclosure. The other day our wild horses came to visit Meatball and Gobbolina and had a little nose around. We have 10 horses which roam freely around our reserve and they usually have their particular hang out places - none of which are normally next to the lion camp!

But one day, our volunteers spotted the group strolling around Meatball and Gobbolina's enclosure, which instinctively caught the curiosity of these big cats. The pair of lions followed them intently as the horses walked around the camp although they didn't make any aggressive movements or charge the fence at them. Surprisingly the herd of horses seemed undeterred by the massive lions and confidently paraded around their camp. We could only imagine what those lions might do if those fences weren't there!

Clarence, Winnie and Nancy's enclosure has had a bit of a clean up recently as Wildlife Coordinators Jo, Keith and Stu have been de-bushing the fence line just outside their camp so that the long grass doesn't interfere with the electric fences. We have also applied weed killer to ensure that the area doesn't become overgrown again. To apply the weed killer we use a spray machine (which our coordinators named "Gloria" for some reason). When the lions become a little too interested in what's happening in front of their camps, the coordinators simply face the spray machine toward them and they back away. Any item that is pointed towards them is considered a threat and they associate it with our dart gun which we use to sedate them if we need to apply any veterinary care to them. They know well to run away when the see something pointed at them!

Clarence is still very close with his girlfriend Nancy, the larger of the two female lions who share his camp. The two usually hang out together, although Winnie is never far away as the three are quite tight and a happy group.
